Title: Nonlinear dynamics applied to lasers: Several problems of
temporal and spatiotemporal dynamics

Abstract: Lasers are subjected to dynamical behaviors such as periodic
or irregular pulsing. In certain conditions "spatial" structures can
also appear, for instance in the transverse direction of the beam, in
the longitudinal direction (in the case of mode-locked lasers), or even
inside the spectrum of emission.
The point of view of nonlinear dynamics has been adopted for
considering several aspects of laser dynamics. In this seminar, we will
review a set of problems that have been considered, concentrating in
particular on the approaches themselves.
Using particular examples, we see how lasers instabilities have been
identified to be formally similar to hydrodynamic instabilities. We
will also present results on the suppression of instabilities using
control techniques.
